Why Is My Aberdeen, NC Heat Pump Freezing Up?

June 24, 2024

There are many reasons that your heat pump could be freezing up, even in the colder months. Keep your air conditioning system in good condition to keep your Aberdeen, NC, space comfortable year-round by learning about some of those reasons. Below, we’ll go over some of the most common reasons your heat pump would freeze up.

Poor Airflow

One of the most common reasons why your heat pump could be freezing up is due to poor airflow. If it’s been a while since you have any ductwork cleaning done, it’s possible that there’s an obstruction in your ductwork, or maybe your air filter is just dirty and it’s restricting airflow. Be sure to check and replace your air filters on a regular basis, make sure all of the necessary vents and registers are open, and call a heating and cooling contractor for regular air conditioner maintenance and to inspect your ductwork.

Low Refrigerant Levels

If your in-home or commercial air conditioning system has low refrigerant levels, it can’t absorb and disburse heat efficiently, which could also be the cause of frozen coils. While it may seem like a simple issue, it’s best to call a heating and air conditioning contractor to help you diagnose the problem and refill the refrigerant.

Defrost Mode Problems

It’s normal for your system to accumulate some frost on the coils, which is why heat pumps have a defrost mode. However, if the pump’s sensors are having issues reading temperatures or there’s something else causing problems, it may not enter defrost mode properly. As a result, the frost will continue accumulating until your heat pump freezes over.

Don’t let heat pump issues leave you without cool air during the hotter months. If you’re having trouble with your heat pump or need any other AC or heating service, contact our friendly team at Cape Fear Air Conditioning in Aberdeen, NC today!
